Look up ten (10) quotes on the subject of education.  For example:

“Education make a people easy to lead,
but difficult to drive:
easy to govern, but impossible to enslave.”
by: Peter Brougham

URL:

  1. Copy and paste the ten quotes into a new blog entry.
  2. After each quote, type the name of the author and also the URL where you got it.
  3. After each quote, write your own reaction to the quote.  What do you think the quote means?  Try to explain what the thought is in your own words.
  4. Search for 10 entries.
  5. Enjoy!

1. ‘It is today we must create the world of the future.’ Eleanor Roosevelt

I think that this means that we have to create the world and make it our own and fix our own problems.  We have to do things for ourselves, not make other people do it for uzs.

2. ‘Those who do nothing are never wrong.’ Theodore de BouvilleI think that this means that they are never wrong because they never do anything!  They just sit there and make people do things for them.

3. ‘Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail’. Ralph Waldo Emerson

I think that this means that you have to do things at your own time and pace.  Also, let loose and do something else than what others are doing.

4. ‘Slow down you are going too fast’. Simon and Garfunkle

I think that this means that you have to do things at your own pace.  You have to time things just right and let it go, do things your own way.

5. ‘You see things and say ‘Why’? But I see things and say ‘Why not?’ G.B Shaw

This means that you have to look at things and say, “Hey, why can’t that happen?  Why can’t we do that??” You have to look at things as though they will change the world.

6. ‘Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land amongst the stars.’ Les Brown

I think that this means that even if you don’t make it, you can still try.

7. ‘Coming, ready or not!’ Childhood game

This means that life isn’t always easy and that it is going to throw things at you every now and then.  Most likely when you least expect it.
8. ‘Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you are going to get.’ Forest Gump’s Mother

Personaly, I think that this means that you are never going to know what is going to happen to you in life, that day, year, month, etc.  You have to take a risk.

9. ‘There is no risk less way to the future, we must choose which set of risks we wish to run.’ Jay Ogilvy

I think that this means that we have to take risks, even though we don’t want to.

10. ‘Plan to be better tomorrow than today, but don’t plan to be finished’. Carol Ann Tomlinson US Educator

I think that this means that we have to better ourselves, but even when we do that, its not over.  You have to keep that up or bring it back down.  You have to better yourself.

Another Ethical Delimma…

**** Below is a situation that happens in the lives of middle school students. Read through the whole piece, then reflect and answer the questions at the end. Take your time on this — don’t just immediately react. There are no right or wrong answers — try to be clear in your answers and provide justifications for what your write.

Mary is an eighth grader and, until recently, pretty popular at school. Lately, she started finding notes in her locker and in her backpack that were really upsetting. The notes were unsigned and mean. They said things like: “ We don’t like how you’re treading on our territory.” “ You act like a bitch.” And even, “ You better watch out because we’re watching you…”

Mary had no idea who might be sending the notes but she had an idea why. In the last few months she had started accepting invitations to high school parties. She had also fooled around with a couple of sophomore guys. She had a feeling that the notes were from some of the high school girls. She knew how gossip got around and how mean other people said the sophomore girls were.

What was she supposed to do? Almost every day this week she received a note. She felt angry, scared, and hurt. She showed the notes to two of her friends. One of them said that whoever is sending them was probably just jealous and she should just ignore them. The other friend said she should show them to a teacher.

Mary felt like there was no good choice. If she tried to ignore the notes she was afraid they would just continue, and she was not only scared, she was mad. She wanted them to stop. But if she turned in the notes, she was sure the whole school would find out and she would probably have to name names as to who she thought was sending them. If the gossip was bad now, wouldn’t’ it be worse then?

  • What do you think Mary should do?
  • Would you do the same thing?
  • What do you think would happen to someone in your school who was in Mary’s situation? (I.e. would she get backlash for hooking up with older guys? Would people gossip about her?)
  • How does gossip play a role in your school, in your community?
  • Have you ever been in a situation similar to Mary’s? How was it resolved?
  • Why do you think people gossip? Have you ever gossiped about someone? Why do you think you did?

First off, I think that she should tell her mom, teacher, etc.  No one deserves to be put through that.  I would someone because I know how much it hurts and I would be angry and would want someone there to help me.  I don’t really know what would happen.  Yeah, people would probably gossip about her but I don’t know if she would get backlashed… Gossip hurts and it can hurt people too.  Gossip can make people commit suicide or even worse…  Yes I have been in a situation like this.  It really hurt too.  When it happened to me, we moved out of my school but I still talked to people about it… I think people gossip because they are bored.  They want some action.  Yes, I have gossiped about someone and I regret it now because me and that person are very close friends now.  I think I did it because I wanted to fit in, I was new to the school and I just wanted a friend.

Ethical Dilemma

**** Below is a situation that happened in the real lives of middle school students in some school in the U.S. Read through the whole piece, then reflect and answer the questions at the end. Take your time on this — don’t just immediately react. There are no right or wrong answers — try to be clear in your answers and provide justifications for what your write.

Maria was worried about her good friend Pam. Pam was always talking about how fat she was and what she was trying to do about it. But the truth is that Pam was not at all fat. In fact, she was downright skinny. Since their freshmen year Pam had lost at least 15 pounds. Now, they were juniors and Maria was afraid that Pam had an eating disorder. Maria was also getting frustrated. Where were all the grown-ups? Who was watching out for Pam besides Maria and her friends?

Maria knew that someone from their school had talked to Pam’s parents last year, and that Pam’s mom had gotten angry about the school poking its nose into family business. Pam’s mom claimed that Pam had a dancer’s body and a high metabolism. That was last year. Now things were worse and Maria felt like she was literally watching her friend disappear.

Finally, one Monday afternoon Maria had had enough. As she watched Pam take three diet pills and eat four grapes for lunch she decided she had to do something. As helpless and scared as she felt now, how would it compare to how she would feel if Pam actually ended up in the hospital…or worse? Pam would be furious if she found out the Maria had talked to someone behind her back. So, Maria had two problems–should she tell someone how bad things were, and if so, whom should she go to?

  • Do you agree with Maria? Do you think she should tell someone about Pam?
  • If so, who do you think she should tell?
  • What do you think Maria should say if Pam asks her if she told someone?
  • Have you ever been in a position like this? What happened? Would you make the same choices if you were in that position again?

I think that she should tell someone about her concern.  She should tell her quidence counculer or someone she trust.  She should tell Pam.  If Pam was a real friend, she would  understand Maria’s concern of her friend.  Pam could end up in the hospital or die from not eating enough!  I don’t think that her mom should let her daughter not eat that much.  It isn’t far.  The mom and other people and other parents should get involved.  Pam is suffering.  I agree strongly with Maria about telling someone.  Her friend could DIE!!  I think that she should tell other people like students, family, friends, etc.  so they can get involved.  Pam’s mom could be arrested because this could be something like child neglect.  I think that if Maria told someone and Pam asked her, she should tell the truth to her.  If Pam was her friend, she would listen and take it into concederation.  I used to think that I was fat.  I am now 12 years old and weigh 96 pounds.  I am so lucky that I had my friends to help me out.  I would NEVER make the same choice again.  I am happy with my weight, but maybe I should add more on to me.  I am under the weight limit.  Well, thats what my doctor said!

Leadership questions!

  1. In your own words, what do you think a LEADER should be?
  2. What are the qualities of a person that a leader should have?
  3. Who is the leader that you look up to or insipred by?
  4. If you were a leader, what would you do?  What would you be a leader of?
  5. What kind of leader do you think you’ll be?

I think that a leader should be someone that has power but uses it wisley.  Like, instead of building a McDonalds, should do a charity or food/ money drive for the poor.  They should help the poor people by providing jobs for everyone so then those people can make it on their own.

I think that a leader should have qualities like… helping people, listening to the people,  helping them out, providing enough for the whole country or whatever they rule, etc.  They should be able to gain the trust of the people.

Even though he died, I look up to Steve Irwin.  He showed people not to live in fear of animals.  He taught us that we should do our best in the world to rescue them, and help them.  They are helpless and need our help.  He taught ME and alot of other people, to see the beauty in everything.  He was a great person.  R.I.P. Steve Irwin!  :)
Hmm… If I was a leader…. I would try and help the people.  Like, providing food and shelter for them.  I wouldn’t look down on other people, you never now what they will become or do in the future that might be great.  I would try my very best to get people to trust me and do my best.  I would try and be a leader of somthing small at first, like Guam.  Then, move on to greater lengths.  Something bigger.  More of a challenge! :P
i think that I would be a pretty efficient leader.  I wouldn’t make promises that I couldn’t keep.  I would try my best.  I would do everything in my power to make my people happy!! :)

In computer class, we had to do a project on leaders in history. I did Harriet Tubman, John F. Kennedy, Steve Irwin, Susan B. Anthony, and Spyros Kyprianou. I think that this was fun and interestion way to learn. I really think that this would be a fun way to learn, if we did it in groups of 2 or 3 and had more leaders! kaos-cactus20.gif floating_blobs02.gif

Today started out like any normal day… well, not so normal. I woke up in a bad mood, found out that one of my friends was upset by something, was late for my Paws-4-Life meeting because my little brother forgot his lunch at home! In study hall, I was really mad because I didn’t eat lunch and was being teased. Then computer came. I was coming up from study hall and when I got to the room outside, started talking to my friend. Then, I heard our teacher yelling for us to form a straight line. I then found out that some of my classmates were hiding peoples bags and stuff. When we got inside, our teacher talked to us about apathetic and people who ARE apathetic.  He told us storises about apathetic people.  Thankfully, I didn’t see!

As many people know, Steve Irwin died September 5th, 2006.  He was stabbed through the heart by a stingray.  He was doing a dive research thing underwater when he got stung.  It is really sad and I cried when I found out.  At least he died doing what he loved, I though.  Steve Irwin was 44 years old and had a wife and 2 kids.  It was a tragedy that will probably effect the lives of many people.

Animation and music…. Do they go together?

In computer class, we watched this DVD called Animusic 2.  It was…. Interesting.  Two guys(Wayne Lytle and Dave Crognale) produced Animusic to show what you can do with animation and music.  You can put the two things together and produce something nice. There were 8 different musical pieces on one DVD!  Some of them were proformed by robots, some were just musical instruments.  I thought it was really good.  I was… different and not something that I would have EVER thought of doing.  For me, it is really hard to do those things.  I think that animation and music DO go together!  Well, that is if they do the animation and music together!images5.jpegimages6.jpegimages4.jpeg

To get pictures, or to find out info. on animusic 1 and 2, you an go to animusic.com

Our computer class had to go to a website called personalitylab.org.  It was really wierd, but we had to take a personality test.  The quiz is called, “The California Child Q-Set”.  There was 5 different basic dimensions called Extaversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience.  There were two “scores” that you could get, High and Low.  I got high on all of mine.

In the Extraversion part, I new some of what it said was true, just like for my other ones.  The  Extraversion part said that I was outgoing and sociable,  perfer to be around people, more popular, etc.  It also said that I was more prone to cigarettes, alcohol, and stuff like that.

Agreeableness, I got a really high score which surprised me alot because I didn’t think that I was that agreeable!!  I  am willing to help people, strangers, etc.

Conscientiousness, It means that I am responsibe and organized.  I am NOT organized.  I think I am responsible…..

In Neuroticim I also got a high score.  Neuroticim means that I was sensitive, emotional, prone, etc.  I new about the sensitive and emotional part!  The reason I am like that is because I have had a lot of bad things happen in my life…

And finally, Openness to Experience.  It means that I like new experiences, am imaginative, getting better grades, etc.  I don’t think that I am at the grades part…

Well, I learned alot about myself!!  I didn’t know that I was more prone to cigarettes and alcohol and stuff!!

Should Students be aloud to bring cell phones to school?

Should Students be aloud to bring cell phones to school?

I think that it should be because if students are in an emergency, they can contact there parents right away. Or, if they need to go somewhere to work on a project, they can call and say, “I need to go to ***** house to work on my project.” Then, parent know where they are. Also, if a parent gets into an accident, someone can call the cell phone and tell them, that way they know. Also, if their parent is going to be late picking them up, they can call and tell them. But, it would be bad too. People could call the students phone during school or someone could steal it. Cell phones could interupt classes. I still strongly believe that cell phones should be allowed in school.
